Someone showed up, gave a lot of herself, and somehow turned completely ordinary moments into memories I still look back on fondly.

Going for walks with no particular destination. Talking about absolutely nothing. Laughing at things so stupid that they somehow became hilarious.

For a while, that was our life.

We were a small family.

One of the uncomfortable parts of growing older is realizing that sometimes we only learn how valuable something was once we no longer have it.

I made mistakes.

I lacked patience.

There were times when I should have compromised and did not. I gave importance to things that, looking back now, never deserved to come before the people who were my family.

There were moments when I failed to take care of someone who deserved much better from me.

I said things I should never have said. I reacted in ways I am not proud of. And there are parts of who I was during that time that I wish I had understood sooner.

I am not writing this because I want to change the past.

Some things cannot be changed.

And I am not writing this because I want to go back.

Life moves forward. People take different paths, meet new people, build new relationships and create new lives.

That is how it should be.

I am writing this because I think part of becoming a better person is being able to look back without trying to rewrite the story and simply say:

Thank you.

Thank you for teaching me a way of loving that I did not fully understand before you.

Thank you for showing me what it means to try to build a life with someone.

Thank you for the love, the effort, the company, and even for the things I was only able to understand once enough time had passed for me to see them clearly.

At the end of that chapter of my life, I made a decision that probably says more than anything else I could write here.

I had to trust another person with something I loved deeply.

Something I had cared for since she was only a couple of months old. Something that had been part of my life for years and that, somewhere along the way, had become part of ours.

Letting go was incredibly difficult.

But I never doubted that I was leaving her with the right person.

I cannot imagine having trusted anyone else with that responsibility.

There are very few things that say more about how highly you think of someone than trusting them with something you love that much.

I miss her.

I probably always will.

But knowing she is loved and cared for by someone I trust completely has always made that loss easier to accept.

There is something else I learned from all of this.

Truly caring about someone does not always mean wanting them close to you.

Sometimes it simply means hoping, quietly and from a distance, that life is good to them.

Without expecting anything in return.

And that is what I hope.

I hope she is surrounded by people who recognize everything she has to give.

I hope she never doubts her own ability to make it through difficult things.

I hope she never believes she needs another person to validate who she is, because her strength, her determination, her kindness and her capacity to love have always belonged entirely to her.

I hope she never loses that ridiculous sense of humor that could turn the dumbest conversation into something unforgettable.

I hope she laughs a lot.

I hope she builds exactly the life she wants.

And I hope that, if she chooses to share that life with someone, she finds a person with the maturity to appreciate and protect the things I did not always know how to appreciate and protect myself.

Not because she needs someone to complete her.

She never did.

But because she deserves someone who understands what a privilege it is to be loved by her.

There are people we stop seeing.

People we stop speaking to.

People with whom things may have ended badly.

And yet, somewhere underneath everything that happened, we can still genuinely hope that life treats them well.

That is not love waiting for another chance.

It is not nostalgia asking to return.

It is gratitude.

And perhaps it is also an apology that took me too long to learn how to say properly.

I am sorry for the moments when I could have been better and chose not to be.

I am sorry for the things I understood too late.

I am sorry I did not always have the patience, maturity or clarity to recognize what mattered while it was still in front of me.

And thank you.

For all of it.

Some people enter our lives to stay.

Others enter our lives and, without realizing it, teach us how we should love the people who come afterward.

Both can matter enormously.

And there are some people for whom, regardless of how much time passes or how far apart life takes us, we never stop hoping that everything turns out well.

I hope life is very good to you.

Una casa más silenciosa

Mi querida Zeldita,

Francisco

Me duele no tenerte cerca.

Fran.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
